Cold, but no snow expected

The maximum temperature in Malta over the next two days is expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius and the minimum should hover around 6 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Office said.

Its statements appear to dash claims for other sources, such as Italian site Meteoweb, which went so far as to claim that it may snow in Malta between tomorrow (Monday) afternoon and Tuesday morning.

Meteoweb said that temperatures at an altitude of 1,500 metres in Lampedusa, Pantalleria and possibly Malta, could go down to -4 and -5°C. The highest point in Malta is 253 metres.

The Met Office said that the mean maximum temperature for February, which is 15.6 degrees Celsius and the mean minimum temperature which is 9.4 degrees Celsius.

The weather for the coming two days is expected to be partly to rather cloudy with isolated showers possibly thundery. The northwest wind will increase to very strong tomorrow and will decrease gradually to rather strong by end of Tuesday.

Due to the strong winds, the wind chill factor (defined as the apparent temperature felt on exposed skin due to the combination of air temperature and wind speed) might make the temperature feel colder than the actual temperature.

G, can you at least change the 'they' into a 'we'? If 'they' can't drive, then neighter can 'we'.

Speak for your self please.

if you manage to warm up the world by half a degree you'll move a lot more air around much further. Big winds, colder winters, dryer summers - sound familiar.

James Wightman, can you support your comment with a scientific report please. What you say is scientifically stupid. First of all, half a degree is considered as within the natural order of variability. Even due to the current negative ENSO phase n(La Niña) the world has cooled by 0.5C. And that's only due to one climate forcing. Now try to read this:

http://iceagenow.info/2011/11/russian-scientists-predict-100-years-cooling/

>>Our planet warms and cools in predictable 200-year cycles corresponding to 200-year variations in the size and luminosity of the Sun, the scientists found. Previous global warmings – of which there have been many – have always been followed by deep cooling.

The 200-year variations in sunspot activity and total solar irradiance (TSI) are the dominating reason for climate change, says Abdussamatov. “In whole, the solar cycles are a key to our understanding of different cyclic variations in the nature and society.”<<

You may also try to follow what British astrophysicist Piers Corbyn is doing, saying and SUCCESSFULLY predicting. Just google him.. go on, it takes some courage to peep through that telescope of scientific reality.

Technically we've already been in the ice age for 2.58 million years...

One of the very few sensible posts I have read for many years. Add to that, if global warming (the man made one) was really induced it would also cause a possible mini ice age ironic as it may sound. This is because of the change of flow caused to the gulf stream thanks to the warming up of oceans. Either way, we will not be looking at Global Warming in the literal sense and as many tend to understand, but a general cooling of the planet brought on by both the Solar Cycle SC24 and the man made global warming scenario.

It is the day after tomorrow, but not the Hollywood movie. It's today's science predicting what tomorrow will be like, for the next decades at least.

Back in 1960 it did snow with a small accumulation underneath the sidewalks. It went down to 0C then and many people, including myself, didn't go to work :))

I've seen it on two occasions. Have a pic of my dark blue Fiat covered in it (lightly one must add) way back in the early 1970s. Melted very quickly though, but was an experience seeing it float down

It was 17th January 1981 when I saw flakes of snow drifting down on that afternoon. The location was at Qormi. The duration was about fifteen minutes. I was very much impressed .

A. Mifsud

Feb 5th, 18:58

...don't worry about that. If this phenomenon really happens, something which is highly unlikely, the snowfall will be with very little or no accumulation. As it reaches the ground it will melt instantly. Therefore those of you thinking of fetching the skis from the loft can put them back in.

I do indeed hope that they drive slow in rainy conditions; the road surfaces in Malta are so poor they become like ice rinks when it rains...

THE GIST - or global warming for idiots....

Rising Arctic temperatures have reduced floating ice cover by 20 percent over the last three decades.
The sun's rays are now absorbed by dark-blue sea rather than bounced back into space by reflective ice and snow.
This heat creates a strong high-pressure system that brings cold polar air into Europe.

Hope this doesn't confuse you.
