Cold, but no snow expected
The maximum temperature in Malta over the next two days is expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius and the minimum should hover around 6 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Office said.
Its statements appear to dash claims for other sources, such as Italian site Meteoweb, which went so far as to claim that it may snow in Malta between tomorrow (Monday) afternoon and Tuesday morning.
Meteoweb said that temperatures at an altitude of 1,500 metres in Lampedusa, Pantalleria and possibly Malta, could go down to -4 and -5°C. The highest point in Malta is 253 metres.
The Met Office said that the mean maximum temperature for February, which is 15.6 degrees Celsius and the mean minimum temperature which is 9.4 degrees Celsius.
The weather for the coming two days is expected to be partly to rather cloudy with isolated showers possibly thundery. The northwest wind will increase to very strong tomorrow and will decrease gradually to rather strong by end of Tuesday.
Due to the strong winds, the wind chill factor (defined as the apparent temperature felt on exposed skin due to the combination of air temperature and wind speed) might make the temperature feel colder than the actual temperature.

Welcome to the island of Malta, blue clear sea, white snow , plenty if icy winds good for wind surfing and also a good business venture for anyone interested in flogging umbrellas at Valletta market. A free cup of hot soup with every purchase, make the best of it as come July / August it will be completly the opposite, no hot soups but more like a pint of cold drink.

Global warming is officially over. Now it's the freeze up that's coming up:
http://theology.geek.nz/?p=3735
The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years. The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century.
.........................
Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.
She argued it is becoming evident that factors other than CO2 play an important role in rising or falling warmth, such as the 60-year water temperature cycles in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. ‘They have insufficiently been appreciated in terms of global climate,’ said Prof Curry. When both oceans were cold in the past, such as from 1940 to 1970, the climate cooled. The Pacific cycle ‘flipped’ back from warm to cold mode in 2008 and the Atlantic is also thought likely to flip in the next few years .
Pal Brekke, senior adviser at the Norwegian Space Centre, said some scientists found the importance of water cycles difficult to accept, because doing so means admitting that the oceans – not CO2 – caused much of the global warming between 1970 and 1997. The same goes for the impact of the sun – which was highly active for much of the 20th Century.
‘Nature is about to carry out a very interesting experiment,’ he said. ‘Ten or 15 years from now, we will be able to determine much better whether the warming of the late 20th Century really was caused by man-made CO2, or by natural variability.’ Meanwhile, since the end of last year, world temperatures have fallen by more than half a degree, as the cold ‘La Nina’ effect has re-emerged in the South Pacific.
‘We’re now well into the second decade of the pause,’ said Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation. ‘If we don’t see convincing evidence of global warming by 2015, it will start to become clear whether the models are bunk. And, if they are, the implications for some scientists could be very serious.’
Just don't throw that fur coat away............

if you manage to warm up the world by half a degree you'll move a lot more air around much further. Big winds, colder winters, dryer summers - sound familiar.
Alex Ellul
Feb 7th, 11:26
James Wightman, can you support your comment with a scientific report please. What you say is scientifically stupid. First of all, half a degree is considered as within the natural order of variability. Even due to the current negative ENSO phase n(La Niña) the world has cooled by 0.5C. And that's only due to one climate forcing. Now try to read this:
http://iceagenow.info/2011/11/russian-scientists-predict-100-years-cooling/
>>Our planet warms and cools in predictable 200-year cycles corresponding to 200-year variations in the size and luminosity of the Sun, the scientists found. Previous global warmings – of which there have been many – have always been followed by deep cooling.
The 200-year variations in sunspot activity and total solar irradiance (TSI) are the dominating reason for climate change, says Abdussamatov. “In whole, the solar cycles are a key to our understanding of different cyclic variations in the nature and society.”<<
You may also try to follow what British astrophysicist Piers Corbyn is doing, saying and SUCCESSFULLY predicting. Just google him.. go on, it takes some courage to peep through that telescope of scientific reality.

Believe it or not, it does not snow when the weather is cold, it is the snow that freezing afterwards and which brings the tempretures down to below freezes point, This creates the worst hazzard on the roads known as black ice, where a pool of clear water freezes on the roads surfaces and will not be visible to the drivers until they drive over them, with the effect that it creates a ice skating ring and that is when one can easily lose control of his vechile,,!

We are just experiecing the future. The future is cold winters. Forget the theory of man-made global warming or its variants. Solar scientists have been predicting this climate for many years and we are noe in the first years of a multi-decadal cold period caused by the solar cycle SC24 that we are in now. This cycle is a long weak one causing a global cooling on our planet. But this is just the beginning. Solar cycle SC25 is predicted to be even more weak. Each solar cycle is normally 11 years. but these two cycles are longer than normal while being weaker. It is predicted that we may have 50 years of cooling with the possibility of a return of the Little Ice Age that planet went through between 800 and 200 years ago, reaching the coldest years around 400 years ago.
One can read many scientific reports onthis issue. The Norwegians, living in a very cold place are taking the science very seriously:

One of the very few sensible posts I have read for many years. Add to that, if global warming (the man made one) was really induced it would also cause a possible mini ice age ironic as it may sound. This is because of the change of flow caused to the gulf stream thanks to the warming up of oceans. Either way, we will not be looking at Global Warming in the literal sense and as many tend to understand, but a general cooling of the planet brought on by both the Solar Cycle SC24 and the man made global warming scenario.

Malta is not equipped for snow. No single vehicle at the moment is able to tackle snowy conditions safely, accidents would be commonplace and the entire island would stall until someone started importing chains (which would then totally wreck our roads).
Not to mention that our rooftops cannot handle snow. I think it's about time the authorities release a small safety leaflet of how to best deal with the situation in case it happens!
However, to be completely fair, if it snows, it will probably be a very small amount ... which could prove even worse, as this would melt soon, resulting in a slush, which is even more dangerous.

I don't like the cold of winter but there's at least one positive thing in that a harshly lower temperature might kill off quite a lot of parasitic insects like the White fly, Mediterranean fruit fly etc. These parasites wreak havoc on fruit trees and unfortunately farmers have to resort to increasing amounts of chemical pesticides to protect their harvest and livelihood.
