Man pleads guilty to injuring two teenagers through careless driving
A 21-year-old man from Qormi this afternoon pleaded guilty to involuntarily causing grievous injuries on a 13-year old and slightly injuring a 16-year-old while driving carelessly at excessive speed.
David Attard was driving a Volkswagen in St Sebastian Street, Qormi yesterday afternoon not far from a sleeping policeman and five metres away from a zebra crossing.
Defence lawyer Edward Gatt said his client lost control and crashed into a metal door, injuring the two teenagers in the process.
He noted that his client was a first time offender and said he should get the minimum penalty.
Senior Police Inspector Joseph Agius said it was important that the accused learned from his mistakes so as not to repeat them. He should know that a car was not a toy.
A decision will be given tomorrow. Until then, Mr Attard was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,500.

What reasoning is this, being the first offender. Yes, the lawyer said that his client was an "offender". So, he should get what he deserves ( he could have killed them with his carelessness) and then the second offense should be harsher and so on and so forth. We are too indisciplined and the authorities are doing nothing about it. All we do is boast and there is nothing to boast about especially with this traffic MISMANAGEMENT.

This 'first time offender' is a false argument - he has probably offended many times with his driving, and not had an incident/accident and been taken to court- only this time he actually hit some kids by wacko driving and ended up in court for the first time.
It is because the courts are not giving proper sentences and taking away driving licences for years where people are hurt that this sort of thing keeps happening with these younger drivers.

Well said Jay,
For sure most probably this is not his first experience in excessive driving. God only knows how much money is being involved by insurances in claims and the others who does not place claims has to make good for the rise in insurance premiums when they need to be raised. Not fair at all on us.

Let's face it, accidents do happen, but to help them happen is an offence, I do hope the court will punish the driver accordingly as a car is a dangerous weapon.

Here we go again with the "accidents happen" excuse. This of course is expected in a country where almost no one is responsible for their actions. It's a culture thing. Just this afternoon I was driving behind a car with 4 young people in it and the driver just drove through a red light at a zebra crossing while people had already started to cross the road! Accident my foot! And the more lenient our courts are, the worse it will get!

the two boys were on the pavement which is quite high! Yes, it was an accident! But formula 1 racing in the middle of the road? I disagree with those that say we should nt judge! The lawyer say that the driver is a first time offender. Mhjux bilfors! Massimu ilu 3 snin isuq u ga tajjar 2 tfal bil qziez!

I happened to be in hospital at the time these teenagers were admitted. The defence lawyer should have rushed to hospital before rushing to court, and see what the poor boy's mother went through. (I know he's doing his job)
The message must be clear: CARS are not toys. It could be as dangerous as any other weapon, as much as it is a useful tool. There is no place for a second 'mistakes'. Most people believe this is not the message being passed, by legislation and/or court judgements. I am not saying that whoever commits such 'mistakes' should be thrown in jail, but should be 'handed down' a long break (if not lifetime) from using such tools. Use it properly or society will not trust you again.

Before we start judging, let's remember that genuine mistakes can happen to everyone.
Some sleeping policemen are indeed too high, and most people try to go partially round them. (The ones at university would be such an example - they're too high). Holes in the road are nothing new either, and again, people would rather swerve wildly than hit a pothole and potentially damage the tyre.
Let's wish the two girls have a speedy recovery, that's the most important thing right now, not flinging blame.

How convenient to forget to give a justification for the excessive speed...do you have any idea of the pain, fear and anxiety which such victims go through. Do NOT assume that they are ok if they do not die because some suffer consequences for years if not for the rest of their lives!

The truth is that this young man hit the two boys seriously injuring them. The defence lawyer says that his client should get minimum penalty. I say that he should get maximum penalty. The court must be very careful, a wrong sentence could be seen as an encouragement to overspeed. The 13yr old is one of my players! This man ruined his life!

WOULD THE LEARNED DEFENCE LAWYER HAVE REASONED THIS WAY HAD THE VICTIM BEEN HIMSELF OR SOMEBODY DEAR TO HIM?

Mr. Storace, I like a good joke myself, and I appreciate your sense of humour. But frankly, this is no laughing matter. There are too many drivers who do not realize the deadly potential of their vehicles. The driver could easily have killed someone. I am in complete agrement with the police Inspector that he should be punished severely enough to learn his lesson.
