Max Ciantar found in possession of heroin
Maximilian Ciantar, the driver who served a jail term for running over twin girls in Attard, was this evening found in possession of heroin at Mater Dei Hospital.
Mr Ciantar, 21, of Marsa, was caught by members of the Drugs Squad in Disneyland, where he was visiting his baby. He has been out of prison for a few days.
On January 17, Mr Ciantar was jailed for a month and fined €100 after a Magistrate found him guilty of having threatened journalists who were reporting a court case late last year.
He has also served a three month jail term after having been found driving in breach of a court order issued after the incident involving the twins.

@Joseph Calleja. It is so easy to vent rage and anger towards Mr. Ciantar for the endless list of misdemeanours he has committed against others AND AGAINST HIMSELF (a serious drug-user has lost touch with any notion of self-esteem as you probably know). You say he is disrespectful and arrogant, showing no regard for others. Mr. Calleja, he is doing all these things to himself so is it any surprise that he has such a provocative streak? He sounds like a heavy drug-user which means that he has forgotten how he feels without drugs. Talk about him being/saying/thinking/acting under the influence! In your last sentence you expressed my feeling exactly; about the baby turning his life around. He was probably under the influence of something while with his child. But he was there, he made the effort to get to Mater Dei. Maybe there is hope. I can understand that crime makes people angry and frightened but wishing him to come up against someone who will beat him to pulp - because he badly hurt two young girls - that is so tit-for-tat. It would punish him, physically. The vicious circle needs to be broken. We need to find out why people turn to crime. The criminal mindset is a mental health issue but many are being pushed into a lifestyle of crime because of circumstances beyond their control. We are NOT all equal. Some of us succumb. Some of us get desperate. Not forgetting that some of the most upright stalwarts in society, both in Malta and abroad, commit crime and get caught (today's London newspapers, front page, interestingly enough, something about a Huhne and his ex-wife, in Court). They get rehabilitated - you want names? - but then you get some poor devil no-hoper and all we want is to lock him up so he doesn't drive again without permission/under the influence, and we'd feel vindicated?! Yes, until the next case.
@James Dewar. You say Mr. Ciantar will self-destruct sometime in the future. I think Mr. Ciantar's future is now Mr Dewar. He is in the process destroying himself this very minute. And if you want to be familiar with the process now, never mind the future, just ask yourself. Would you want to be in Mr. Ciantar's shoes as he is NOW? Of course you wouldn't. You are still in touch with your self-respect. He lost his ages ago and, if he does not get help, and co-operate, he can only get worse. Just think how terrifying life must be if the only way to deal with it is to knock oneself out, in self-destruct mode. Horrible thought. Age doesn't matter but he's only 21. He sought his pleasure and sired a child. Condemnable behaviour in the eyes of many but he was sober enough at the time and proved his humanity. It worries me that people are not so much angry because of his anti-social behaviour. Rather they are angry at what they see is lenient treatment.

Its true regarding most of the comments and to hear this person name so often and always regarding something against the law i do not blame people including myself to dislike such a person But could the authorities see if this person needs help, I mean for sure he needs some sort of help on the other hand if this is refused by this person then next time he should not even be taken to court because he does not seem to care much regarding the sentences he gets.
James Dewar

For help to be effective it must be wanted. I feel sure that this man does not wish to change his lifestyle and why should he? He plays the legal system to his advantage on every occasion and has absolutely no respect for society in general and authority in particular. He is however, likely to self destruct at some point.

@J.Degabriele. I am sure that the two young girls from Attard are hurting still and angry. What you, and I, and Ciantar need to understand is that anti-social behaviour is erratic and it has consequences. I understand that. You may need some help to understand that (anger and throwing away the keys is not a solution). Ciantar most certainly needs to understand this. Why is he going against that very basic human instinct which is our determination t survive? Why is he choosing the path of self-destruction? And understanding this is not by jailing and throwing away the keys. This is meant to be a deterrent but it is not working. A supposed deterrent only succeeds in making the felon more hardened and more embroiled in drug-taking. We need to try another approach. I suggest therapy, and more specifically, family therapy. We need to find out why people take drugs, drugs that are expensive, dangerous, mess up lives. So why do people take drugs? I think it is a fascinating question to ask. And I want answers. I think you too, Mr. Degabriele, want answers.
In my previous comment I mentioned unacceptable, punitive attitude of many Maltese in Christian Malta. This needs qualification. There are non-religious people who never go to church. And they feel free to be punitive. I am not so concerned about these. What DOES 'worry' me are the good people of Malta, still observant and following the usual rituals. And yet these same people are all out for vengeance and summary, mindless and dismissive punishments. This I find disappointing.
Joseph Calleja

@ Mr Xuereb
What this man needs is somebody to teach him a lesson in respecting other people and sooner or later he is going to meet that someone who will do just that. He is so arrogant that he is challenging the system and he knows that in Malta he can get away with that. He knows that the courts are incompetent more than he is and he thrives on that notion.Sooner or later this man will meet his match, I hope it won't be too late. He has no respect for the law and or his parents. I hope that maybe his baby will have some influence for the better.

Let's not forget that an English man possessing hash recently got 10 years. This one drove without a licence and insurance, he almost killed 2 girls whom he injured, he's a relapser, he assaulted journalists..and he's still enjoying his freedom.
This reminds me of another similar person who about 2 years ago over run a biker. What happened to him?
I am in favour of the electric chair which should be used on hopeless cases like these.
I hope that social services intervene and place the baby with another family.

Is this really moral? Hounding out a private citizen, registering his every misdemeanor for public scrutiny on Malta's foremost website? Is this not like a medieval public lynching? Whatever this guy does, he remains a private citizen. It is the law and the police who have to deal with him, according to law. When it is often declared that people who have falled foul of the law should be rehabilitated, is all this publicity useful? It is only serving to fill this person, and maybe his family, with big disgust against society. Also, there might also be people would actually see him as a hero, a sort of defiant "rebel without a cause". Are journalists in Malta, or anywhere for that matter, conscious of the end result of their actions?
Joe Fenech

Medieval practices were replaced by democratic laws and fair justice. The laws courts in Malta are not doing their job properly hence the 'lynching'. It is a way of people showing their disapproval towards a cancer-stricken system.

This person has no respect to authority or anyone. Therapy alone will get this guy nowhere. He should only be put in jail for a long time before he kills or seriously injure someone. He is a totally selfish & spoiled criminal, proofing himself and to all of us that he can get away over and over again with his criminal behaviour such as running over children on zebra crossing, attacking journalists while doing their work, driving without a licence and now smoking in a Hospital. He needs discipline to whack his criminal behaviour out of him and keep decent citizen safe. When he is ready for therapy he should ask for it and given to him.

I am disappointed that the mindset that says lock him up and throw away the keys persists in Malta. Not very Christlike. Why are people so hooked on punishment? Why are they so vindictive? Why not be more constructive and find out why he, and so many others, are hell-bent on destroying themselves and those around them. I reckon that the Courts know this and that is the reason why they appear lenient. But being lenient is not good enough. What people like Ciantar, and his family, need is therapy. This would be costly but no more so than keeping someone in prison who will get worse not better. It is high time we realised that anti-social behaviour is a symptom of victimhood, is often a cry for help. We owe Ciantar and his family a helping hand and thereby help others and ourselves into the bargain, by becoming more mature and caring. Just like Christ wanted us to be. Because the answer is not to lock up and throw away the key.
We say that nobody is entirely 'bad' anymore than anybody is entirely 'good'. He was visiting his child in hospital so he cannot be entirely 'rotten'. Nobody has the right to call anybody rotten, not when one is mature enough to go to the bother of finding out WHY someone is rotten. Today it is Ciantar. Tomorrow it could be yourself or one of yours.
I am the messenger. Go on, shoot me! And prove me right.

It's not society that is not assisting him, it's the authorities.
If it were for society (=all of us as reflected in the comments below), he should have been given a harsher punishment fitting the crime, which should have served as an example for road bullies.

I have never met the chap - but I will not condemn him outrightly for what he has done. No doubt he has caused such terrbile harm and much grief to so many people. Some which, despite all attempts, is irreperable. And will remain so - despite all said and done.
But society has to take more than one step back- and study where it has failed - collectively or even individaully. Those close to him - or not so close to him .
With a hope of setting things straight one day - in tne not so distant future . Or even distant future.
At a glance, it would appear that the underlying problem is evident - the cause for the multiple of scenarios.
Has someone along the line missed the wood for the trees - in identifying the raison d'etre wwhy this young chap has sparkled of, allegfedly, so much harm, ... to so many .
What is the real issue.?

"On January 17, Mr Ciantar was jailed for a month "....this means that he should be out of prison only after February 16. This person is defies the courts and society and should not be allowed any remission. Can somebody explain why during his active prison term he was out of prison? A nd defying other legislation? The public merits a reply to this!

A one month sentence coupled with 50% remission for good behavious = roughly two weeks time served.
