La Valette celebrates his birthday
Video: Mark Zammit Cordina
Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette's 517th birthday was celebrated in Valletta today.
Valletta Living History organised a public commemoration of this day together with a number of entities in Valletta.
The Societa Filarmonica La Valette set off from St Paul Street and headed to Great Siege Square where it will met up with re-enactors representing La Valette and his men.
A big cake was prepared by the Tanti family who run Number 11 Café in the Embassy Complex and an open 'party' was held with attendees being given out to those present.

Valletta today is not the same Valletta that was built by the knights of St John, in Fact very few buildings remain of those mid 16th century. St John's conventual church a house in Merchants street and some other sporadic buildings.
Our Lady of Victories Church is not the same one built, it is a church built early 18th century
What saddens me is to see the obscene general workers union built instead of an auberge , and that horrible anglican cathedral and the other obscene carmelite dome.
I wish these buildings were not there because Valletta was never intended to have them, not forgetting the cherry on the cake the new piano project which is so forte at the entrance.

The surname of the grandmaster is written as la Valette (with one L ) while the name of the Capital City -Il-Belt is written with a double LL
A godd reply is kindly solicited.

"and that there is always a chance of having a labour regime!"
Remember what Franco said about the democratic credentials of this country!
Also, who voted against the will of the absolute majority as expressed in the divorce referendum? Does this fall within your meaning of regime???

Be careful, Mr Brincat before rushing in where angels fear to tread.
'Remember what Franco said about the democratic credentials of this country' How very, very stupid. And who is this |Franco Debono whose statements are given such weight? Had he been made a minister he would have had no problem with our democratic credentials. As far as know when Franco did not bring down the govt. he was given allo sort of names by labour apologists. After all when the labour criminals razed the Times building to the ground, the Great Dictator claimed that they were professors of democracy.
"And who voted against..." Wahda isbah mill-ohra. The absolute majority wanted divorce and that is exactly what the PN govt gave them. In spite of Adrian Vassallo's vote and in spite of the PM's vote. And I ask: And who terrorised the country for nearly six years even though the ABSOLUTE majority wanted a PN government? And who employed 8000 persons on the eve of a general election?

Is the La Vallette family still in existence?
In that case, perhaps Minister Fenech might persuade them to invest in the yet to be set up "Parliamentary Finance Vehicle" which somehow will pay off the new parliamentary building!

We should all say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to la Vallette. But if he sees what we have done to his beautiful city he will renounce ever coming to Malta.

One wonders what he would say about the new gate without a gate and the awful building which is overshadowing one of his gems i.e. St James Cavalier!

The birth date is wrong. La Vallette was born in 1498! This has been clearly stated by his contemporaries Francisco Balbi di Correggio (in 1568) and Hipolito Sans (in 1582), who both write in their respective works that La Vallette was 67 years old during the Great Siege. Unfortunately, it would seem that Maltese historians continue to ignore these clear declarations of La Vallette's contemporaries!
