These figures contrast with Labour leader Joseph Muscat’s repeated declaration, including during a visit to Gżira yesterday, that the March 10 election will be a difficult one for his party.
Figures of first count votes each party received in the last round of elections in the localities going to the polls next month show the Nationalist Party got 57,908 votes while Labour candidates won 61,619.
In the last round, in 2007 or 2008, Labour elected 116 councillors and the PN 110. Alternattiva Demokratika received 2,800 first count votes and elected two candidates.
Vittoriosa, Senglea, Qormi, Żebbuġ, Birżebbuġa, Dingli, Gżira, Ħamrun, Kirkop, Luqa, Marsa, Marsaxlokk, Mosta, Paola, Santa Lucija, Xagħra and Żurrieq all councils with a Labour majority.
In Sliema, Labour candidates received 2,071 first count votes and PN candidates won 5,445.
AD’s chairman, Michael Briguglio, garnered 457 first count votes.
