Maltese truck driver arrested in Catania
A Maltese truck driver and two Italians were today arrested by Italian police in Catania and charged with smuggling endangered exotic birds to Malta, ANSA news agency reported.
Investigators confiscated 200 birds, which were given to a wildlife rescue centre for eventual release, and $1,320.
It is believed the suspects hoped to sell the birds in Malta.

I'm giggling a bit because it appears that the Police in Catania are more concerned with arresting those who smuggle birds and do not concentrate where the real crime is. Now don't get me wrong. I adore animals and have my share at home too (a dog and a cat, no birds... birds should go free)... yet I know Catania so well and these days the rate of crime has increased so much that I wonder how the police find the time to deal with the petty smugglers and yet never seem to find armed robbers, thieves, drug pushers, fugitives, etc.

Hope this is a lesson to all maltese thinking of bring illegal birds into malta. This is what Shenghen is all about. Open boarders within Europe, including Malta and all kind of drugs and illegal material ener our little island.

Re Mr. Farrugia's comment:
Nice way of putting it! So according to your argument no thief should be sent to prison, we should just wait to see who buys the goods and arrest them. Endangered birds cannot belong to a single person, to do with them as he/she pleases, they belong to everyone, even to the generations to come. These persons saw the niche in the market and figured that legal protection for the birds increased their value because no law abiding citizen would satisfy that demand. So while we should not lessen the blame of the 'customers' we should realize that you are actually excusing the trafficers here, if they are found to be guilty!

A demand does not justify illegality. Smuggling is to be condemened. I say well done to the Italian police.

I find this very discriminatory towards those who love to keep exotic birds as pets. Why should they be restricted to the regular budgies, canaries and whatnot when they can have a bird of paradise or a penguin?

Well done to the Italian police - - keep up the good work. May you lock up the perpetrators in a small cage and throw away the key.

We're not in the middle ages. If this guy went to sicily for the birds, means that there is a demand... I'd rather see these people who 'demand' in jail, not the middle man...

@Stephen Farrugia - - - people used to say the same thing about human slavery - - -there is a demand. The same is said about illegal drugs too. There being a demand does not and NEVER WILL make it right. Choosing to be the "middle man" was this guys life choice - - - and he was wrong.

@ Mr Farrugia
I agree with you 100%, we are not in the middle ages anymore. Infact this is why society is achieving great results in deterring criminals.

Stephen: I agree with Janet - she seem she love birds like I do. We are egoists just make birds our pets and close them in cages, let's try that with you ?
About your comment: I'd rather see these people who 'demand' in jail, not the middle man... this is non sense. If you have a kid and demand you all days just to eat sweets, will you give it to him because he ask you ? That's why countries have established laws to prohibit what is bad for us.
Long life to our birds !
