The Manoel Theatre, in collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Brian Schembri, is tonight presenting Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major featuring violinist Alexandre da Costa and a performance of Beethoven’s rumbustious Symphony No. 7.

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major is a special work for a number of reasons, first and foremost, because it is one of the most beautiful works that exist, composed by one of the most popular classical great composers, Beethoven. It also happens to be his only violin concerto.

Composed in a number of weeks between November and December 1806, the work is today recognised as one of the most popular violin concertos ever written.

“In Malta, I have always been associated with Beethoven’s music and since it has been quite a long time since I last performed some Beethoven, we thought that performing two of his most outstanding works was the most natural step for us,” explains Brian Schembri.

“We are also very proud to be joined by the brilliant Canadian concert violinist Alexandre da Costa.”

Winner of many national and international first prizes, Mr Da Costa has given over a thousand concerts and recitals throughout North America, Mexico, Europe, United Kingdom and Asia and performed in major halls such as Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Philharmonie, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Hamburg’s Musikhalle, Madrid’s National Auditorium and Beijing’s Poly Theatre.

The violinist has also performed with most major philharmonic orchestras in Europe.
