Kaya: The feel-good factor Eurovision brings with it is high
The first time Kaya took part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest was in 2000. Her first attempt can be defined a success: her song, Our Love, which was a duet with Kurt Calleja, finished third. Not bad going for a novice. Kaya is taking part again this year with the song First Time. Already doing very well in the online polls, will this be the year the singer moves from runner-up to winner – and if yes, what are her expectations of the contest that gets everyone so excited?
“I think Eurovision is a step to open up career opportunities. I saw this even from my participation in 2000: it brought with it a number of opportunities in Europe that led to some achievements I am very happy with. This year I even had the chance to showcase my talent in New York at the Couture Fashion Week. As you can imagine this was a huge step for me.”
She then adds that representing Malta in Azerbaijan is not only the perfect platform for a singer’s talent: it’s also the chance to represent your country.
“The feel-good factor about this is high. It’s what makes me keep on trying.”
Kaya started dancing lessons when still young. Her brother had opted for voice coaching and soon she started showing an interest in this too.
“My brother is still into music as well. He is a guitarist and the main vocalist for the rock band Reborn. As for me, I don’t just enjoy the singing part, I also write my own songs and I compose.”
Kaya describes her entry as a very dramatic ballad which changes into a pop song with Greek influences and “a bit of rock sound” at the end. The song, she says, talks about the inner confessions of a girl who is holding on to her former lover and is still consumed by the memories, feelings and emotions which haunt her.
“I think it’s a winner because it is so different from all the songs we hear every year in Eurovision. I’m sure it will stand out and leave a mark with the audience.”
Sounds a tad depressing though! Kaya disagrees, adding that the actual message is one of hope.
“It's about trying to believe in yourself and learning how to stand on your own feet after the loss of an important part of your life.”
Kaya’s outfit for the festival will match the drama of her ballad, with styling by Carina Camilleri, Pierre Camille and Sasha. She believes that Malta can make it this year at Azerbaijan – but only if we choose the best song instead of focusing only on the singer.
“My biggest fear at the moment is that my voice won’t be in the best condition on the night. That’s definitely the scariest bit. But hopefully all will go well and the high from seeing the audience enjoying my song will definitely make it all worth it.”
