Stanley Clews writes:

Much has already been written about that “gentleman of journalism” Charles Grech Orr, so I will not repeat all the good things he did during his loyal and long-serving career at Allied Newspapers.

Coincidentally, we joined Allied Malta Newspapers at the same time in 1947, he to the newsroom and I the sports department. Tom Hedley was Editor at the time.

Living in Sliema we often went home together after work and struck up a friendship which continued even after I left journalism in 1959 to spend 25 years in the Dockyard where I finished up as Personnel and Administration Manager.

Charles, of course, went on to make a name for himself as one of the finest editors The Times has had the privilege of having.

On his retirement – and mine also – our friendship flourished as we often met on Sunday mornings or Saturday evenings before Mass at Stella Maris Church.

We would keep each other up-to-date with our activities and often recalled those days when he served in the newsroom.

Unfortunately my health will preclude me from attending his funeral today, but my thoughts and prayers will be offered for Charles and his family to whom I offer my condolences and sympathy.

Charles Grech Orr’s name will be remembered with pride as a journalist and a gentleman of the old school.

I will remember him as a friend and former colleague.
