Girl admits stealing 'to help boyfriend'
Three teenagers were this morning charged with attempted theft from a house in Madliena Village in Swieqi last Saturday.
One of the teenagers, a 15-year-old girl, was also accused of stealing items from the same apartment a week earlier.
The court heard that the girl was in a relationship with one of the accused, an 18-year-old man, who she wanted to help because he was out of a job and had been thrown out of home because of problems.
Both of them admitted to the charges. The girl was placed on probation for three years while the man, who refused to be represented by a lawyer, was jailed for 18 months suspended for three years.
The other accused, a 16-year-old man, was charged separately and pleaded not guilty. He claimed that the other two were lying about him. He was granted bail against a personal guarantee opf €2,000.

Personal guarantee means that he doesn't deposit any moiney but will have to pay the sum mentioned or go to prison if he breaks the law again.

How can it be that an 16 year old actually has €2,000 cash for a personal guarantee? I would think this is more likely to be 'hogwash / phantom money' and the courts have not really sequestered these funds - writing in a ledger maybe?

Allow me to give the girl a suggestion. If she wants to help her boyfriend who's out of a job she should help him write a CV, scan vacancies and help him with submitting applications. Alternatively she should direct him to ETC and enrol in a course to enhance his skills.

there we go again! another suspended sentence!
there are countless famillies facing such problems brought about by drugs or by their children feeling the need to 'suuport' their partners who they think are in duress
there are innumerable cases of children stealing from their parents' and other homes, forging cheques, going into debt etc in order to make up for their needs, be they drugs, helping partners keep an apartment or an expensive car, designer clothes, all sorts of crazy fashion, a sleazy lifestyle etc
most probably that is why the person was thrown out of home and then our benevolent justice system dishes out a suspended sentence
unfortunately, the sad experience of the past years has amply revealed that suspended sentences are a passport to more bad behaviour
the general feeling appears to be - I got away so lightly the first time I was caught, so to heck to what may happen the next time I get nabbed and this goes on and on

The man refused to be represented by a lawyer.
How many times do we hear of further crimes being committed simply to pay a lawyer's fees? Is this not a vicious circle?
Why have, unlike in civil law suits and procedures, fees for criminal representation never been established?
