DLH appeal for funds for €2m restoration of historic church
Din l-Art Helwa has launched an appeal for funds to assist in the €2m rehabilitation of Our Lady of Victories Church in Valletta.
The Church was the first building erected in Valletta and was also the first resting place of Grand Master De Valette in 1568.
Over the years, the Knights of St John endowed the church with numerous treasures. The most important are the ceiling paintings by the Maltese Baroque Artist, Alessio Erardi, in the early 18th Century. These depict various scenes from the Life of the Virgin Mary.
The Church suffered from neglect, from the ravages of time, grime, water infiltration and from the bomb blast that destroyed the nearby
Opera House in WWII.
DLH President Simone Mizzi, who launched the appeal, said the NGO was also calling for volunteers to help keep the church open for longer hours.
Donations to the Church will help finance the conservation of the ceiling paintings, restore the ground floor walls and uncover any existing murals
on the perimeter, treat the infested woodwork and stop decay to monuments
and altars. The project will also involve the restoration of the 18th century organ, endow the crypt with a dignified entrance to mark the first burial place of Grand Master de Valette and create interpretation schemes and a small museum to display its works of art.
Donations may be made on HSBC Account 008-082166-001 or by cheque to Din l-Art Helwa.

It will be a great idea if funds will be made available for several of our old chapels many of which are literally fally apart. Such treasures can be enjoyed by future generations only if they are taken care of now.

I agree with you , sometimes DLH becomes sleepy and inactive.. Perhaps they might try to bring
the church down and built in its stead appartments for young newly weds. More appropriate , dont you think....

As far as I know the Central Government, even through the Valletta Rehabiliation Committee, has alreadey carried out a lot of restoration works in this church, including the ceiling paintings which was done by italian experts.

The impression that you give is in total contrast with reality and the video shown with this article. The VRC did some work on the vault paintings through the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. This expert intervention saved two of the eight Erardi vault segments between 2004 and 2008. Still a lot needs to be done, like the completion and conservation of the important vault paintings. Restore the ground fl oor perimeter walls and uncover their murals. Endow the historic crypt, where GM de Valette was first buried, with a dignified access. Restoration of the 18th Century Organ. Treat and restore the choir and sacristy woodwork, the monuments, altars, and the numerous works of art, and organise their presentation. Build an external accessibility ramp and establish signage and didactic programmes to interpret the history of the church, its art and its restoration, and create a website.
