Mellieħa 3
Żebbuġ Rangers 3

A goal scored just two minutes from time denied Mellieħa three important points that would have drawn them closer to the other promotion contenders in the standings.

Żebbuġ, on the other hand, were forced to play with ten players for 64 minutes. They remain fourth with 21 points.

Incidentally, this was the third consecutive draw for both sides.

Rangers opened the scoring after nine minutes.

Nigerian striker Uchenna Anyanwu fled the northerners’ defence and hit home with a powerful drive.

Mellieħa’s Wayne Borg St John evaded his marker but with the goalkeeper beaten his shot was blocked on the line by the retreating Mercieca.

On 21 minutes, Rangers doubled their advantage.

Anyanwyu’s shot was temporarily stopped by the goalkeeper and from the rebound Mark Brincat tapped the ball home.

However, Brincat marred his day five minutes later when he was sent off for a foul.

A free-kick was given and Borg St John pulled a goal back for Mellieħa after pouncing on a loose ball.

On the half-hour mark, Thiago Loquete saw his shot from the distance saved in style by the alert Reuben Debono in the Żebbuġ goal.

But, Mellieħa turned the tide in their favour just before the half-time whistle.

First, Mercieca caught Borg’s foot in the box and a penalty was given. Phil Taylor did not miss from the spot.

Then, on 45 minutes, Mellieħa took the lead for the first time when Loquete took Debono by surprise with a shot from the distance.

With an extra man on the pitch, Mellieħa retained the upper-hand as the second half got underway.

Loquete sent a teasing cross towards Borg St John but the latter failed to connect from an ideal position.

Yet, when all seemed lost for Rangers, and Mellieħa were within sight of all three points, Charlon Sammut embarked on a scorching run on the left flank before beating goalkeeper Gauci with a firm grounder to save the day for his side.
