A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 shook an area in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of central Peru early today, US government researchers said.

The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 00:11 am local time (0511 GMT), was 23 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of the town of Ica, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
