Up to one million people will gather in Catania’s Piazza del Duomo to celebrate the 500-year-old Sant’Agata Festival in honour of the Unesco World Heritage city’s patron saint.
An international cross-country race will kick-start the celebrations. This will be followed by fireworks and a night-long parade of the effigy of St Agatha.
The dates commemorate the martyrdom of this revered Sicilian saint. Travel to nearby Catania from Malta with Virtu Ferries or fly with Air Malta or Meridiana.
