In front of a full house and an elated crowd, Malta’s heavyweight Billy Corito “The Hitman” made a grand finale to an electrifying night of boxing when he knocked out his UK challenger Ian Toby in less than half way of the second round to score his eighth straight win.

Besides winning eight fights in a row this was the seventh time that Corito knocked out his opponent, six of whom in the second round and one in the first round – Mark McGarry in January 2011.

“Simply fantastic,” said an overjoyed Spencer Brown, chairman of the European Boxing Federation at the end of the first Malta event.

“The night gave the best to all concerned – an enthusiastic large crowd, good quality boxing and a rousing Corito performance.

“This was a big night for Corito and boxing in Malta in general,” remarked Joe Egan the Irish heavyweight legend and film star, now also EBF international spokesman.

“The crowd showed its appreciation to excellent boxing, an encouraging outcome for future events.”

The Big Night of Boxing held at the Sky Club, Paceville, was organised by local promoter Borg in collaboration with the European Boxing Federation.

Tyronne Borg won his bout when he knocked out Dale Ball seconds into the second round. Dione Galea beat Jordan Black while Slinky Cumberlach defeated Etienne Spiteri.

Phill Worel had the better of Justin Grech while the match between Clayton Vella and Scott Conners ended in a draw.

“This was a successful night of boxing both for the participants themselves and also for the satisfied full-size audience that patronised the event,” commented James Ward, secretary and matchmaker of the EBF.
