Going on stage is a serious business for Amber! When I ask her whether she has any superstitions she laughs ruefully and confesses to “many”: purple is banned not only from her outfits but also from the outfits of those who are in her team, from backing vocals to dancers, composers and authors.

“I also wear good luck charms. This is going to be my second attempt at representing Malta and I’m hoping it will be the time that I succeed. I’d love to have the opportunity to be part of it all and I’m sure I could learn a lot and make new friends as well.”

Amber started singing about four years ago after a lifetime of practising judo on a competitive level. Unfortunately, an accident that happened during one of the competitions meant that she could not continue to pursue the discipline – music turned out to be a good alternative and since then Amber hasn’t looked back.

The singer’s entry, Answer With Your Eyes, is a love ballad with what she describes as a jazzy twist.

“I believe the song is very unique and I am working very hard in order to showcase it perfectly. It tells the story of a relationship between two people, where this young woman wishes that her man shows her his love and affection through his eyes and not through words and material things.”

Amber says that she is very well-aware that the Eurovision invariably attracts a lot of criticism. However, she says that critics should bear in mind that the contest offers a prestigious platform for singers, composers and authors from across Europe.

“The whole contingent is given the opportunity to perform in front of a massive audience. It’s a one time opportunity. Winning depends on how willing to work hard you are. Of course there is an element of luck – but it’s definitely not the be-all and end-all.”

With a super hectic week coming up, Amber says that life at the moment is a whirlwind of rehearsals, meetings and consultations.

“I’m enjoying every minute of it. I do have one worry – whether I’ll make it to round two for the Saturday final or not! I honestly believe that all the Maltese singers who were our ambassadors at the Eurovision in the past have always made us proud, no matter what the end result was or what critics said. Of course, we are competing against countries that are much bigger than us and have infinitely more resources. Many factors affect which country is named final winner.”
