Maltese-owned vessel Salina Bay has been contracted to help out in the fuel salvage operation of the Costa Concordia.

One of the largest salvage companiesin the world, SMIT Salvage BV Rotterdam, contracted the vessel, which is ownedand operated by the Island BunkerOils Group and managed by TankshipManagement Ltd.

The Salina Bay sailed from its northern Italian base in La Spezia on Saturday evening and set sail to Giglio. It is a fully equipped oil spill recovery vessel contracted to the European Maritime Safety Agency.

Its role in this operation is to assist in the salvage of about 3,000 tons of fuel oil from the Costa Concordia. Salina Bay will be in constant contact with the company’s crisis centre in Malta.
