A 'considerable' amount of jewellery was stolen from GB Jewellers in Valley Road, Birkirkara, this evening.

The theft took place at about 7.30 p.m. as the shop was about to close.  Two persons barged in, brandished a weapon and started breaking open the showcases using a mallet, which they then left on the floor.

The thieves escaped in a waiting car. No one was injured.

It was the second major burglary today after a break-in at the Coppini foreign currency exchange in Valletta, reported in the morning.
