I describe my last trip to Malta at the beginning of this year as an assault on my mucous membranes. I was sneezing very heavily, experiencing headaches and feeling generally under the weather. I’ve experienced these symptoms each time I visit Malta and they invariably resolve shortly after I return home – evidence the culprit is air pollution.
One would imagine that the government would do its utmost to reduce air pollution and that this would be reflected in the its energy policy. Right? No, wrong. The Maltese government’s decision to build a power station which utilises heavy fuel oil is unforgiveable. Heavy fuel oil is highly polluting and no amount of propaganda will tell me otherwise.
The health of Malta’s citizens is evidently not very high up in the government’s list of priorities. It is necessary for Maltese citizens most likely to be affected by this disastrous decision to speak out against this madness.
