The government’s declared intention to carry out a major overhaul of the censorship laws affecting stage performances and films is most welcome and a feather in the cap of Culture Minister Mario de Marco.
However, it begs the fundamental question as to the government’s intentions towards the outdated restrictions in our laws relating to public morality when it comes to books and visual arts.
The government’s intentions also stand in stark contradiction to the Attorney General’s filing of a Criminal Court appeal against Mark Camilleri and Alex Vella Gera in relation to the publication of the short story Li Tkisser Sewwi. The said appeal proceedings are still pending before the Maltese courts.
It is hoped that the overhaul of the censorship laws be widened to remove all limitations relating to other spheres of art and literature and that the appeal proceedings against Mr Camilleri and Mr Vella Gera be withdrawn with immediate effect.
