Green light for new parking in Floriana

The sloped, stepped spectator stands next to the Floriana football pitch will be transformed into an open-air parking area offering about 300 spaces after the project got the green light from the planning authority.
Recommended for approval, the project will level out the graded steps by almost 2.5 metres below Triq Il-Mall in Floriana, to bring it in line with the adjacent car park.
The project, handled by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, forms part of a larger development that includes the construction of a spectator stand and roofing over the existing car park. This involves separate planning applications.
The car park will cover about 5,000 square metres and the football ground does not form part of the project footprint. It will have two access points: the existing access leading to Great Siege Road and a new one to The Mall.
In its recommendations, Transport Malta noted that a car park did not generate “new traffic” but “accommodated” cars that were already on the roads.
The car park’s main purpose is to replace “some of those places lost” by the Valletta City Gate project.
The corporation this week issued a call for tenders for the construction of the car park.

Typical Maltese reasoning! Don't you ever tire of complaining guys? :)
Yes we do get tired and frustrated at complaining but we prefer not to sit on our bums and accept everything with a smile like the angel on the pedestal.
The building of his new car park goes against the minister's plan for people to make more use of the new (still inadequate) transport service. The more parking spaces the more cars entering Floriana. I for one never travel to Valletta in my own car because of the parking problem but knowing that my chances of finding a parking place have increased I am willing to risk it. I'm sure that's the way hundreds more are reasoning.

Another open air eyesore, adding up to the MCP car park eyesore that has been left unchecked by the Authorities.
Vote catching exercise, nothing more than that.
Spend the millions to regenerate Valletta. Go on. Continue messing up this already messed up strip of land!

Doesn't anyone else lament the loss of land formerly attributed to sports (aka liesure activities) of which is represented by only 1% of our land mass (the airport is 1.4%) and uses that land to encourage people to be even more inactive in using their cars?

Another missed opportunity to go several levels underground and thereby increase the 300 car park spaces by the same number of underground levels added, as could still be done in the Valletta ditch below City Gate which will have a welcome garden at surface level. Anyone who is serious about helping Valletta's development into a living city both day and night has to provide parking and not oblige everyone to use public transportation only, which should nonetheless continue to be upgraded in order to provide an adequate and attractive alternative for whoever wants to make use of it. But for heaven's sake, not everyone can or wants to go shopping or to the theatre or dining using public transportation, not to mention the requirement of depending on one's own transportation for outdoor work related purposes or for running errands related to family obligations. Both public and private transport should be developed in parallel and not one at the expense of the other. 300 parking spaces are minimal and should be increased by going underground to maximise on this opportunity and expense, since this obvious solution to the problematic issue of parking for Valletta is more a matter of when it is provided rather than if. Any government should realise that this is the sort of solution that wins elections, especially in the current nightmare scenario of accessing during the Valletta due to the congestion and lack of parking problems that have been intentionally designed by the powers that be in their mypoic attempt to force people onto public transport in the first place!

Typical TM reasoning(!)! More parking spaces will inevitably attract more cars. More people will use their cars to visit Valletta knowing that now there is more chance to find where to park one's car.
Transport Malta's statement reflects the warped thinking of this entity.

First and foremost I personally am against this parking project. If anything, the Floriana area should have been completely dug up and and hidden underground parking with much higher capacity built. The arena should be turned into what it has been for decades, a sports arena. There is a risk of more open spaces eventually giving way to ugly and useless office blocks!
