The Manoel Theatre is presenting an evening of chamber music on Tuesday.

The concert features double-bass player Gjorgji Cincievski and pianist Rosetta De Battista and guest violinist Marcelline Agius.

The works performed will begin with Invocation by Czech composer Miroslav Gajdoš, continues with Schubert’s Sonata in A minor for arpeggione and piano, arranged by Stuart Sankey for double bass and piano and who also made a similar arrangement for Paganini’s Introduction and variations on the violin G string of Rossini’s Dal tuo stellato soglio from the opera Mosè in Egitto.

Following the interval, the recital continues with Intermezzo Opus 9 No.1 by the Russian composer Reinhold Glière and continues with two arrangements for double bass and piano by Mr Cincievski. These are Schumann’s Drei Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano, Opus 73 and Elegy Opus 3, No. 1 by Rakhmaninov. The concert ends with guest violinist Ms Agius taking part in Bottesini’s brilliant Grande Duo Concertante for double bass, violin and piano.

Mr Cincievski was born in Skopje, capital of Macedonia. He worked under conductors such as Gergiev, Luisi, Haitink and Masur and also took part in festivals in Salzburg, Montepulciano and Vienna. Mr Cincievski is also winner of several prestigious prizes, including three in the UK: the Sir Charles Hallè, the Didsbury Emmanuel solo recital prize and the Eugene Cruft Double Bass Prize. He is currently first double bass with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ms Agius pursues a very intensive career, recording in Malta and abroad, teaching and also performing under distinguished conductors with the MPO and foreign orchestras.

She forms part of the Anon String Quartet whose repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music.

Ms De Battista is a well-established Maltese pianist and a highly-specialised accompanist.

She has been vocal coach and/or music director for several locally-produced musicals including Side by Side with Sondheim, Company, Honk, Oliver and Chicago.

She initiated the highly successful Minigig, taking live music to towns and villages all over Malta and has been Arts Education consultant for the Manoel Theatre since September 2011.

She has since launched the Manoel’s Toi Toi educa-tional programme.
