Embassy denies claim of US troop presence in Malta

The US Embassy in a single line statement this morning reiterated the Maltese government's statement categorically denying claims that there are US troops in Malta.

The government's statement was issued two days ago after former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney said in a blog that "12,000 U.S. troops (are) stationed in Malta and they are about to make their descent into Libya".

Cynthia McKinney, a peace activist and a US Presidential nominee for the Green Party, made the statement on her blog http://allthingscynthiamckinney.posterous.com under the headline: Why Is President Obama Sending 12,000 US Troops To Libya?

She said she received the information from foreign media publications and "Libyan sources" but later added that she hoped it was wrong.

"The allegations are completely false," the government had said in its statement.

Ms McKinney has opposed the US's military intervention in Libya and has accused Nato and her country of trying to assassinate Muammar Gaddafi.

Few Americans have a clue about any country outside the US. I doubt she knows where Malta is or the size let alone what the size 12,000 troops even consists of.

Mr. Azzopardi: have you seen the size of the US Embassy in Ta'Qali? It could easily take twice that number. Go and see it for yourself and then talk. Why is it that we never got an explantion that a tiny island like Malta should have one of the biggest US embassies in Europe? can someone explain.

Answer:

Correction.

Those silos do not contain missiles. They were specifically designed to accommodate the new PT-352 Mk.VII assets. These are state-of-the-art +ve ion propelled Personnel Transporters. They are silent in flight and are also invisible to normal radar. What gives them away is the extremely loud bang that is heard when they pass overhead....as was noticed by several witnesses near Dingli Cliffs during the Libyan crisis, last year.
