The Police Conducts Office registered 573 cases of guilt on charges of prostitution between 2007 and 2011, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Franco Debono.

He said police statistics showed the number of cases in which guilt was proven but not the number of people involved.

Punishment handed down had included imprisonment, suspended sentences, probation, conditional discharge, fines and warnings or admonishments.

Answering other PQs by Dr Debono, the minister said that in the last two years 197 people were arraigned in court a total of 1,403 times on charges related to prostitution. All but one were Maltese citizens.

In the first 10 months of 2011, 92 people were arraigned in court a total of 634 times on charges of loitering with a view to prostitution.
