Blood donations last year increased by 1,894 to 16,960, up from 15,096 in 2010, Health Minister Joe Cassar said.

The minister thanked donors for their noble act which was saving lives.

Demand for blood, he said, had increased as a result of the increase in daily operations.

And as the number of operations this year was expected to continue to grow, it was important that all those who could give blood did so.

He encouraged companies and entities to create schemes to help society through blood donations.
