Car park to replace Floriana stands

The spectator stands alongside the Floriana football pitch will be transformed into an open-air car park if the planning authority approves the project on Friday.

The project by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, a government entity, is expected to level the stepped area along the Mall and transform it into a car park.

A spokesman for the Infrastructure Ministry, responsible for the Corporation, said the planned car park will cover some 5,000 square metres. She said the football ground did not form part of the project footprint.

“The development is restricted to the area where there are the stands, between the football ground and the Mall,” the spokesman said.

She said the car park surface would be in tarmac and the planning authority’s case officer report was recommending approval.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority will decide on the project on Friday and the corporation this week issued a call for tenders for the construction of the car park.

€2 a day? You are clearly joking. A full day's parking should be charged at a minimum of €10. Even that is cheap compared to other European countries even when taking into account income differentials.

The Maltese need to get used to paying for the priviledge of parking a car (which is in itself a priviledge).

Times have changed and paying sensible market rates for parking have arrived. 'Pay & Display' schemes should also be launched for street parking.

Not everything Mr Cassar.

Last year I visited Scotland and parked at the Ferrytoll Park and Ride to visit Edinburgh.

It was free, you park under a roof and can stay overnight free of charge as well.
