Updated - Dalli denies links with Franco Debono
Updated - Adds video - European Commissioner John Dalli this morning strongly denied that he had any links with Franco Debono, as implied in sections of the media.
He said he had never spoken to Dr Debono, on the phone or by other means. Nor did he meet him.
Last week Dr Debono spoke on how Mr Dalli had been unjustly treated by the Nationalist Party, but he also said he had no contact with Mr Dalli.
Last week Mr Dalli refused to comment on the current political crisis in Malta although his spokesman said that he is ‘closely following’ the situation.
Asked for his views on the current political crisis in Malta, Mr Dalli refused to give his views with his spokesman, Frederic Vincent only stating that “Commissioner Dalli - like all Maltese citizens - is following closely the situation in his home country.”

Of course Commissioner Dalli is following closely the situation in his home country....as we are all doing. By the way Mr. Dalli we happen also to be following closely the situation in the E.U., the Eurozone and your particular work in Brussels. What's the situation re genetically modified crops? Is the E.U. really allowing those into its territory? Did you really push for that....or was it just rumours? Please reply.

@ M.Borg.
Hasn't our prim minister been telling us that we are facing difficult times for quite some time?
Why did the Govt go on a spending spree ( The new pariament, the grand harbour bridge, ) and other projects that I am sure could have waited for better times.
You might say ,to create work. For whom? for the 6000 foregin workers, most of whom in the building industry?

Dalli would be considered fortunate in my opinion to have links with Franco Debono and why is he distancing himself from him?Has anyone bothered to ask DeBono about this claim by Dalli?

John Dalli could well have been Malta's "saviour" if only they would have let him.

By sending J.Dalli to brussels,he did not loose anything, actually he gained. On the other hand it was we who lost, mostly his experience in finance.
I can't even imagine Dalli asked ( I could have said ,Made, but I am putting it a bit mild) to revise the budget.
This is one point in favour of Dr.F.Debono. Was T.Fenech censored by the P.M. for coming with a budget not acceptable to the E.U.?
I think he should have been sent packing. This could be just one example of what Dr.Franco is talking about, some are just not accountable.

Silvio the finance minister must have known what he was doing. You know during the budget those forty millions meant more promises (making the budget temporarily more attractive) to the Maltese which eventually went up in smoke. However it is today obvious that the P.N. in government leaves no stone unturned to build his false successes on lies and nothing but damed lies. What a shame. Dr. Franko Debono must know what he is doing.

@ silvio loporto
Did France or Italy know about the downgrade they were just handed down last Friday?
No they did not, and even they have to revise their budget. only difference is the way their budget is going to be revised. The governemt said it is not touching pensions and social services. So why not be thankful ?
We are living in very diffucult times. Anyone who thinks that any government, be it NP or LP, can lower W&E rates is living in an other world.

@John Farrugia
Dalli would have been a great leader, because he has a strong will, yet in my opinion their were two men who if one of them was leader of MLP, MLP would have long been in power and they will have been still their by know and these are Hon. G. Abela, and Mr. Lino Spiteri. Dalli yes he would have been a good leader but he is no match for these two.

J. Abela
Jan 16th, 14:57
Are you being serious, Mr. Farrugia? ...and Mr. Schembri, Mr. Dalli was hated by labourites until Mr. Dalli turned bitter towards the present PN leadership because he wasn't made leader. This goes to show how unsuitable he is for leading a party.
Mr Andrew Camilleri
Jan 16th, 18:11
J. Abela: Mr. Dalli became bitter only after GonziPN tried to eradicate him from the Party. When he saw how they were trying to push him out, how could he not have felt bitter? Look at what EFA did when he contested against Guido deMarco for the leadership - EFA worked hand-in-hand with Guido and kept the party united. Gonzi on the other hand turned it into GonziPN - jew maghna, jew kontra taghna.
