Balzan Youths boosted their Championship Pool aspirations when they edged Sliema Wanderers 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at the Hibs Stadium today.

Sliema had made the perfect start as after 16 minutes Ryan Fenech put them ahead with a fine strike from just outside the area.

But Balzan soon responded and managed to draw level 10 minutes later when Martin Deanov moved past two Sliema defenders before releasing Pedrinho who kept his balance to fire past Sliema goalkeeper Henry Bonello.

On the restart both teams threw everything into attack but a draw seemed on the cards when Sliema’s Danial Mitev and Jonathan Francica, of Balzan, were dismissed following an argument.

More drama was in store in the 90th minute when Fagner Bernardes dashed inside the area and was upended by Josef Mifsud with referee Esther Azzopardi immediately pointing to the spot. But Pedrinho saw his shot brilliantly saved by Sliema goalkeeper Henry Bonello.

But Balzan were not to be denied and on 92 minutes Bernardes released Miguel Ciantar who slid the ball past Bonello.

Balzan midfielder Pedrinho was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
