The presence of chemical substances called ‘Persistent Organic Pollutants’ (Pops) in many of the products people consume, their effect on health and the environment, and what can be done to reduce their presence in everyday life was the subject of a seminar and exhibition held recently at the University.

United Nations Environment Programme consultant Roland Weber, spoke on ‘Securing health in a world of chemicals’. After his talk, three workshops were held on the presence of Pops in food, textile products and electrical and electronic equipment.

The seminar ended with the film Silent Snow and a debate on issues raised by the film and the presence of Pops in our lives. The exhibition showed what Pops are, why they are dangerous, how they affect people, how they get into food, clothes and electronic equipment, and solutions to reduce their presence.

The event was organised by the Cleaner Technology Centre in conjunction with the Regional Activity Centre for Cleaner Production of the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP).

It was attended by University students, staff from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority’s Environment Protection Directorate and the Office of the Prime Minister, and industrialists.
