A theatre group of actors with learning disabilities will be staging their new creation next weekend.

Theatre group Opening Doors’ play Bejn it-Triq u Jiena is a development of their previous work, Moi et Nous/Jien u Aħna.

The focus this time will be on the journeys people go through and how they interact in different circumstances and environments.

Moi et Nous/Jien u Aħna was performed to a full theatre in November 2010. The actors have performed at festivals in the UK and Belgium .

The group follows accessible methods of theatre practice that focuses on the generation of authentic creative material. The performances are devised, so the group spends much time improvising and exploring themes relevant to the individuals in the group.

In this way, Opening Doors hopes to provide a space where people with learning disabilities can express themselves and offer a fresh and meaningful aesthetic to theatre. In doing so it hopes to give the public the opportunity to experience the creative work of disabled people while also offering a theatre experience that might resonate personally with people with disabilities.

In a move towards a more inclusive aesthetic, this time non-disabled performers will also be a part of the team. Their roles will be specifically that of performers and not of facilitators or support.

The group will perform at St James Cavalier, Valletta, on Saturday and Sunday.
