The Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) is currently considering a new site in the southern part of the island which is being pro-posed by the government for a new rugby stadium.

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport Clyde Pulitold reporters at the Rugby Club-house in Marsa yesterday, that the pro-posed area is currently being assessed by the MRFU and if an agreement is reached a rugby stadium will be constructed.

“We analysed the site carefully and now talks are in process for the construction of a new rugby stadium,” he said.

“Marsa was never mentioned among the possibilities but we proposed three other different sites before. Unfortunately, none of them satisfied the prerequisites of the MRFU.

“We never gave up though and at the moment another area in the south is being assessed.

“Although a number of issues have to be settled first, I’m hopeful this will be the right one and an agreement signed soon.”

Martin Galea, the MRFU presi-dent, said they were still con- sidering the new site but con-firmed that some problems will first have to be solved before a deal is struck.

“There are issues to deal with and taken into consideration before we give our go-ahead,” he said.

“The area we’re talking about only fits one pitch and we are studying ways how to expand the project.

“It’s still early days but we are carefully evaluating the situation before a decision is taken.”
