Paul M. Cassar is spot on writing that the artistic Christmas crib made in 2009 for St George’s Basilica should have been stored safely and securely.
The youngsters who were given parish permission to set up another Christmas crib at Dar LBV should have been supervised. Had they been, what Mr Cassar complains about would not have happened.
Just over three years ago, one of the hand-made Sicilian statuettes that since 1998 had adorned the basilica crib was stolen while on display for the Christmas season. It has not been recovered or replaced.
Unfortunately, such things do happen. It could be a shortfall in administrative responsibility. Or it could be because there exist people who are deceitful, crooks or simply kleptomaniacs.
At times, it cannot be helped that a church becomes the victim of stolen property, perversely rerouted legacies and apathy for our forebears’ heritage. St George’s is, sadly, one of these!
