I really cannot understand why Eddie Privitera took me to task because I compared Franco Debono to Dom Mintoff, when he wrote exactly my thoughts, that is, when an MP is elected, he represents his constituents and party and not his own agenda.
He then asked me what I had written and thought about Mr Mintoff in 1988 when he brought down the Labour government. Here is a very simple and obvious answer.
I, like the rest of all Nationalist Party sympathisers, could not believe our eyes and ears when we knew that with Mr Mintoff’s actions Malta would have the possibility to reapply for membership of the EU and that the failed and disastrous administration of Alfred Sant was coming to an end after 22 months.
So, yes, I was very pleased that after all the terrible years that we experienced when Mr Mintoff led the country, and I do not need to go into details, finally, with his actions he was partly making up for all the damage inflicted in the past.
However, I still think that Dr Sant and his party were right to call Mr Mintoff a traitor.
