European Commissioner John Dalli is refusing to comment on the current political crisis in Malta although his spokesman said that he is ‘closely following’ the situation.
Mr Dalli – a critic of Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and his challenger for the PN leadership back in 2004 – refused to comment on the situation.
Asked for his views on the current political crisis in Malta, Mr Dalli refused to give his views with his spokesman, Frederic Vincent only stating that “Commissioner Dalli - like all Maltese citizens - is following closely the situation in his home country.”
After losing the PN leadership contest in 2004 against Lawrence Gonzi, Mr Dalli was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in the first Gonzi cabinet. He resigned his post a few months later.
Following his re-election as Prime Minister in 2008, Dr Gonzi appointed Mr Dalli as Minister for Health and Social Security and later nominated him as Malta’s EU Commissioner in the second Barroso Commission.
