The average worker arrives at his or her desk at 8.09 a.m., spends £3.23 on lunch, drinks three cups of tea or coffee, and argues with a colleague once a day, according to new research.

Our results show that we are working longer hours than ever before but this has not dented our enjoyment of the job.

A study of 2,000 office employees showed a usual working day of nine hours 13 minutes, a 28-minute lunch break, normally sitting at their desk, with 10 minutes and 15 seconds spent on social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The survey by Mars Drinks, aimed at finding the average daily life of British workers, also revealed that computer breakdowns were the main bugbear, although many people said they were annoyed when colleagues did not make their fair share of tea and coffee.

Pens going missing and coffee machines breaking down were also said to annoy office employees, who told researchers they spent almost 10 minutes a day on banking and shopping online.

Jenni Morgan of Mars Drinks UK said: “Our results show that we are working longer hours than ever before but this has not dented our enjoyment of the job.

“It is also very interesting to learn that we are, on the whole, a very agreeable lot who prefer to get along with colleagues and bosses rather than spend the day arguing and moaning.”
