Malta needs to know, as soon as possible, which party has a governing majority, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat said this afternoon.

Addressing a reception for representatives of constituted bodies, he said that Malta cannot afford to lose time to uncertainty in the current situation, particularly the economic scenario in Malta and Europe.

The country, Dr Muscat said, needed stability more than ever before.

The PL, he said, would not go down the populist route and may take decisions which some could disagree with, but it was ready to do so for the sake of the country.

Dr Muscat last week called on the Prime Minister to seek a vote of confidence in parliament after Nationalist MP Franco Debono said he had no confidence in the government and would vote against.

Dr Muscat has also written to the Speaker urging him to summon parliament with urgency to discuss the current situation.
