Malta and China are marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in this Year of the Dragon.

The China Cultural Centre and the Valletta local council are again joining forces to celebrate the 2012 Happy Chinese New Year, an event that is being dedicated to the anniversary.

The China Jiangsu ArtTroupe, consisting of 23 artists selected from the Yancheng Municipal Company of Performing Arts of Jiangsu Province, will be taking part in the celebrations.

An opening performance, featuring Chinese traditional music, dance and acrobatics, will be held at St George’s Square, Valletta, on January 14 at 10.30 a.m. Later, at 8 p.m., the troupe will present a programme of Chinese classical dance, music, songs and acrobatics at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

A Chinese National Music Concert will be held at Sir Temi Zammit Hall of the University of Malta the following day at 8 p.m. The artists will use traditional Chinese instruments such as pipa (lute), erhu, dizi (flute) and yang-qin (Dulcimer).

To mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Maltese diplomatic relations, a photographic exhibition will be mounted at the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Valletta from February 2 to 9.

The programme of activities also includes a cultural fair at the China Cultural Centre in Melita Street, Valletta on February 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the occasion of the Chinese Lanterns Festival.
