Malta recently participated for the second time in the European Week for Waste Reduction.

With the co-ordination of 34 organisations from 19 countries, a record 7,035 actions were registered, more than 50 per cent the previous year.

Malta, with the co-ordination of Wasteserv Malta Ltd, implemented no fewer than 34 actions.

These were focused on the following themes: ‘Too much waste’; ‘Better production – better consumption’; ‘A longer life for products – less waste thrown away’.

The action developers communicated efficiently with the participants and the public on how small everyday actionscan help reduce waste andmove towards sustainabledevelopment.

The waste reduction week saw various paper banks being set up within schools to encourage the use of both sides of paper sheets, promoting the need to reduce packaging waste in open markets and supermarkets, radio and TV programmes targeting various audiences about conserving our resources, organisation of clean-up days, reduction of packaging waste from hotels and other useful actions.

Action developers included authorities, businesses and schools.

In the 2010 edition, a Maltese participant, architect Elisa Andretti, was selected as a winner.

Ms Andretti’s winning action was the launch of a website to encourage the reuse of building and con-struction material (www.thereusemap.com).
