Qormi got their Championship Pool aspirations back on track when they saw off Hamrun Spartans 3-0 in a one-sided derby at the National Stadium.

Returning skipper Joseph Farrugia was without doubt the protagonist of Qormi's victory yesterday as he inspired his team to a fine performance which saw them dominate their opponents for much of the match.

In fact it was a moment of brilliance from Farrugia that put Qormi ahead.

The clock marked 34 minutes when Farrugia retrieved the ball just outside the area and let fly a curling drive that gave no chance to Hamrun goalkeeper Omar Borg.

Farrugia could have added a second on 37 minutes when Qormi was awarded a penalty but his shot from the spot was blocked by Borg.

Hamrun tried to fight back after the interval but for all their possession they rarely troubled the Qormi goal.

Instead it was the Yellow-Blacks who struck again on 65 minutes when in a quick break initiated by Matthew Bartolo, the ball fell into the path of Jorginho who tucked the ball past Borg.

Qormi wrapped up the points 13 minutes from time when Steve Bonnici floored Jorginho inside the area and from the resulting penalty Jorginho hit the ball home. Here, the Hamrun keeper protested heavily as he felt that the Brazilian had touched the ball twice and was booked for the second time by the referee who subsequently dismissed him.

Joseph Farrugia was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
