Updated: Government denies it wants to dissolve council for partisan reasons
The government's attempt to dissolve Sliema council is a move for an election to be held so that the PN could possibly regain its majority, the PL's spokesman on local councils, Stefan Buontempo said today.
However, the government denied this allegation and said that should the council be dissolved, this would be in the interest of the community.
The council was yesterday given a 10-day warning to solve its long-standing problems or face dissolution.
The Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Councils said in a statement that this would not be the first time that councils were dissolved for different reasons.
These included those of Paola, Sannat and Mtarfa, three examples where the claim that this was done to give a party or other political advantage could surely not be used.
Dr Buontempo said in his statement that should an election be held in Sliema this year, the new council would only have one year in office, as, according to law, another election would have to be held in the following year, when it would be due.
Contrary to the PN, he said, the PL did not play games with the democratic system and even when the PN lost the majority it allowed a Nationalist mayor to continue to head the council.

Come on, why don't we do away with the 65 or so Local Councils and install just thirteen - one for each of the electoral districts? We taxpayers do not wish to continue being fleeced the way we are with by so many Local Councils which more often than not do not really perform properly. Too many localities are simply not being administered well at Local Council level.
But it seems that the P.N. and the L.P. keep putting partisan interests before national. As always happens in Malta and Gozo. How utterly disgraceful that we have all these unperforming Councils eating us up! And acting abusively in the meantime....

It needs to be dissolved because of inefficiency and being ineffective. We do not care about politics, which has ruined the purpose of local councils. It's simple, the Sliema council is not "operating".

From this press realise I get the impression that whoever wrote it does not live in Sliema, as he will realise that the town is in a total state of abandon.

Mela insejtu li kien hemm zmien li l-PN cahhad lin-nies tal-Marsa u taz-Zejtun milli jivvuttaw biex forsi jirbah l-elezzjoni tal-kunsilli. L-istess se jsir issa f'Tas Sliema!
L-elezzjoni generali waslet fil-qrib u importanti li l-PN jmurr tajjeb biex jidher b'sahtu qabel elezzjoni generali. U b'hekk inessi lill-Maltin li kien il-partit konservattiv kontra d-divorzju, problemi li Dr Gonzi tilef it-tmexxija tal-partit u tal-pajjiz u ruxmata problemi ohra.
Forsi mhux ghalhekk ukoll li nofs Malta se tivvotta fil-Kunsilli!
Lil min tafu issaqsix ghalih!

What a stupid way to take "political" mileage out of this one. But then I read it's Stefan Bountempo and I understand.
