Blood situation critical
The critical blood shortage of 'O' type blood, reported yesterday, has not improved and the supply has continued to dwindle, the Blood Bank said today.
A spokesman for the Blood Bank said that in spite of its appeal yesterday, not many people turned up to donate blood.
In another appeal today, the bank said that both positive and negative blood was in short supply and anyone who could donate was being encouraged to do so.
The bank has less than 20 bags of O negative blood and around 50 bags of O positive.
Demand for blood has increased as more operations are being carried out.
Blood donations can be made at the Blood Bank next to St Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays to Sundays or at the Gozo General Hospital between 8.30 and 11.30 a.m. Mondays to Saturdays.
Donors have to be in possession of their identity card.

I am 'O' negative and this news is very worrying since people of my blood type can donate to everyone but can only receive from 'O' negative blood! I tried to donate but I was told that I don't weigh enough to give which to me did not make sense because I am not underweight and I am pretty sure that I would have been fine! As far as I know you have to weigh at least 50 kilos.. I weigh 51 ..

@ Yaz Tabone.. I find your reason for not donating blood puerile , egoistic and pathetic. Would you therefore refuse a transfusion if you needed it? Furthermore would you rather safety practices were less stringent and therefore more risky to blood receivers? Let's all just thank God we have a transfusion centre staffed in a diligent manner thus protecting both donors and receivers.

Suggesting A CHANGE in your methods or keep begging on the newspaper for donors!!!
It is PEOPLE who DISCRIMINATE others on the bases of sex, age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and the lot. HIV virus, AIDS and all other STI's (and STD's) DO NOT DISCRIMINATE...

I notice that people like yourself always state such comments. Well here is your answer....
Any person who lived in certain parts of the world during certain times are unable to donate due to the risk of the human variant of Mad Cow Disease. The human variant is called variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (vCJD) which is also a fatal brain disease. Scientists believe that vCJD is Mad Cow Disease that has somehow transferred to humans, possibly through the food chain.
There is now evidence from a small number of case reports involving patients and laboratory animal studies that vCJD can be transmitted through transfusion. There is no test for vCJD in humans that could be used to screen blood donors and to protect the blood supply. This means that blood programs must take special precautions to keep vCJD out of the blood supply by avoiding collections from those who have been where this disease is found.
donor eligibility rules related to vCJD are as follows:
You are not eligible to donate if:
From January 1, 1980, through December 31, 1996, you spent (visited or lived) a cumulative time of 3 months or more, in the United Kingdom (UK), or
From January 1, 1980, to present, you had a blood transfusion in any country(ies) in the (UK). The UK includes any of the countries listed below.

From 1980 through 1990 – Belgium, the Netherlands (Holland), or Germany
From 1980 through 1996 – Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Italy or Greece.
You spent (visited or lived) a cumulative time of 5 years or more from January 1, 1980, to present, in any combination of country(ies) in Europe, including
in the UK from 1980 through 1996 as listed in above on or associated with military bases as described above, and in other countries in Europe as listed below:

Ms Tabone: "i refuse to donate until they sort this issue out."
So you just refuse to donate, just for pique, well done very nice of you, and you let people die perhaps, because of your stupid pique.
What about if you need bloood, would ou refuse it just for pique too?

This is indeed a very serious situation. Let us be generous as always. We can save lives today. Perhaps tomorrow others can save our lives
