Philip Attard, 46 of Fgura, who has a history of negligent and dangerous driving, was today charged in court with crashing into four cars while driving in Hamrun yesterday afternoon.

He crashed into a Suzuki Swift, then into a Renault Megane, a route bus and finally into a Hyundai Accent. He suffered facial injuries in the fourth crash.

Mr Attard was arraigned in court today to face 22 charges including causing serius injury to the driver of the Hyundai Accent and slightly injuring two passengers in the same car, negligent and dangerous driving, failing to submit to a breathalyser test, threatening policemen, assaulting a police sergeant, breaching the peace, offending public morals, swearing, and being drunk.

He was also charged with damaging a Suzuki Swift and threatening its driver, as well as damaging the other vehicles.

The incidents happened at around 4.30 p.m.

Police Inspector Robert Vella told the court that Mr Attard had refused to be hospitalised to be treated for his injuries but later accepted treatment at a health centre. He also refused to phone relatives to get him a change of clothes.

He appeared in court in the same blood stained clothing he wore yesterday.

The inspector said the accused has a 'history' of negligent and dangerous driving.

Defence counsel Arthur Azzopardi suggested an immediate suspension of the driving licence of the accused as a condition for the granting of bail.

However, the court refused bail in view of the seriousness of the crimes and because of the accused could not be trusted.
