Deadly fight started in bedroom
The penthouse apartment where the double homicide took place.
The autopsies on the bodies of Duncan Zammit and Nicholas Gera established that both men bled to death, police sources said.
Mr Zammit and Mr Gera killed each other with knives at Mr Zammit's apartment in High Street, Sliema at around 6.30 a.m. yesterday.
Between stab wounds, superficial cuts and bruises, Mr Zammit had more than 20 while Mr Gera had more than 10.
There were no stab wounds on the men's backs indicating that they faced each other throughout the fight - Mr Zammit bled from neck and arm injuries while Mr Gera died of stab wounds in the neck.
Mr Gera is believed to have gone to the apartment with the intention to kill because he headed straight for the bedroom, where the fight between the two men started.
"If you plan on robbing someone, you'd be as quiet as possible, take whatever you want and leave without making a noise," the sources said.
Mr Zammit and his wife Claire, the daughter of entrepreneur Anglu Xuereb, had been asleep when the incident happened, the sources confirmed.
Mr Gera did not take any weapon with him but found himself a big steak knife from the couple's apartment before confronting Mr Zammit. Sources said two knives were used in the fight.

To say that this is an incident that is nobody's business but the families' concerned...... If it were an ordinary tiff with the in-laws or between husband and wife, then yes, it is not anybody's business. But this is not an ordinary, everyday sort of argument. This is much more serious. As such, it is in the public interest to know what happened IF NOTHING ELSE FOR THE FAMILIES CONCERNED. Even if, hypothetically, the public lost interest/did not want to know, and the investigators closed the case, what then?! The families concerned would be left to grieve in peace. But surely, this matter needs closure for them MOST OF ALL. It is all very well, when catastrophe hits us, to close the windows, close the doors, shut our eyes and turn in on ourselves. And pray the Lord in whose merciful hands we commend ourselves. In Malta particularly it has always been so and nothing ever changes. Seeking a unique palliative for anything/everything that goes wrong for us because we just hate anything that shakes our complacency, comes at a price I'm afraid. It leaves us forever unprepared as we see prayer as the safety-valve for every eventuality.
Elsewhere, and following a fatal stabbing on a London street on Boxing Day, someone commented and thanked the Lord that Malta was a safe place. Famous last words, as we say.

Very sad to hear about these deaths in Sliema as regular visitor to Malta. It's hard to comprehend such an awful thing happening in such a lovely place with such lovely people. I do have to say that that most of the comments on these pages are rushing to pour rather a lot of guilt on Mr Gera simply because this incident happened in the home of Mr Zammit. People (and the journalists here) seem ready to draw conclusions on Mr Gera without having any real idea as to what happened or understand the nature of the relationship between the parties involved. None of us will ever really know the chain events that happened in that apartment so it's not helpful to chastise anyone in death.

There is an american saying that goes something like this "Don't go to a gun fight wielding a knife".
.
If there was an intention to kill, one would go armed and not look for something handy in te kitchen, at least that what common sense dictates, but then what common sense was there behind this tragedy.
Both men are unfortunately dead and the real reasons for this fracas will be buried with them.

This is a very saddening story. I pray for their families.
On another note.... the Police said
"If you plan on robbing someone, you'd be as quiet as possible, take whatever you want and leave without making a noise,"
TRUE but using the same reasoning...
If you plan to kill someone you take a weapon!

In my humble opinion, it's nobody's business it was purely a personal issue.............RIP for both of them.

Murders, break-ins, theft and attempted burglaries are everyone's business. They are crimes against the state.

only 3 persons know the real facts. it's not our business to judge. our only business is to pray for the 2 victims and the others left behind!

Apart from the fact that one has to be directly involved to know what happened and why in such tragedies, I can only see one fact.. the innocent victims!!
Both families will not celebrate the Christmas/ New Year season as it used to do.
I can only imagine those twins, that were graced by being part of a well-being family, then be hit by such a tragic loss.. and the Gera family, that hopefully will not feel any guilt of a family member's 'involvement' in this accident.

From the USA we send all our prayers to the Gera and Zammit families. Prayers to keep all of your hearts warm and open to each other in a time when you want to turn the other way, prayers to keep God at your heart center and know he is always with you all and in him you will find strength always. Prayers for every family member and friend as well as those cute little angels to stick together in light and love, even if right now there seems to be only darkness. You are all in our thoughts, words and prayers. God Bless!

I would like to send my sincere condolences to all the families concerned. This was a total brutal and in my eyes a senseless ending to two lives and as a result left families heartbroken and two beautiful children that will now grow up without their father. I wish all families concerned the strength to deal with the current tragedies and to find the strength to get through the grief in remembering the great times you spent with your loved one.
Grief has no time table, no schedule. There is no linear pattern to the experience. You are on a journey, a lifelong journey that will take you to unexpected places. The pain will be so excruciating at times that you will wonder how you will go on for even one more day. And at other times, your pain will be a dull ache. And some days -- or moments -- you will not be aware of pain at all. Throughout the process, remember that you have deep roots that anchor you. Even when you cannot see your roots, they are there keeping you grounded through the storms, the seasons, the changes

I went to school with Nicky way back at St.Edwards. Although I haven't seen him in a few years, I always remembered him as a well mannered kid, kind hearted and friendly, nothing like the way he has been portrayed in the articles being published. Much like many people who knew him, what happened came as an extreme shock! While I have been trying to piece what has been published on various website still there are too many loose ends to pin point who drew knives and what sparked the argument. Most of the stories are just keep conflicting and I believe it is a bit early to say that Mr.Gera went with the intention to kill. What drives someone to that conclusion may I ask? Unfortunately fights can get out of hand, this one went too far.
It is sad that some of the comments posted in previous articles failed to acknowledge that two families suffered a loss. What happened that morning can only be explained through investigations and the sole survivor. I just hope the real truth eventually comes out. I would like express my deepest sympathy and send my condolences to both families, Gera and Xuereb what has happened is a real tragedy which no one should ever have to go through. RIP Nicky & RIP Duncan

it is very very rare for thieves to rob houses without making sure it is empty ,also it is not rare that if a thief is surprised he will turn violent in order not to get caught!

sad way to start the new year. After hearing all the rumours and bs stories from people during the day as the smart island comunity we are. This needs to be investigated further in depth.no one can be called a hero and murderer until proved. But in my opinion this was a strange one .....

In all fairness, the initial reports were of a botched burglary. So a considerable part of the blame lies with whoever reported it as so in the first place.
The story emerging now is that it was a fight between acquaintances/friends. If that is so, it is nobody's business except for the immediate family and the authorities. Any speculation will only serve to further hurt the bereaved.

Considerable responsibility would rest on the police in their comments in this case. They should not make official statements to the press before they have investigated and found some evidence. Media only reports what the police tells them.

The conspiracy theories emerging in many comments I read on this website are all out of order! The Police will endeavour to find the primary aspect of any such crime: motive! I feel it is not the time to churn up 'fishy this', 'cover-up that' ecc, ecc.
There will be time for the facts to emerge and should they not, it will certainly not be the first time. For some reason a father of two and the son of a desperate mother lay motionless in the morgue, and that is the real tragery. The focus of all comments, at this stage of proceedings, is to pay our respects and show our sorrow at this double loss of life!

Totally agree with your comments.... any comments portraying one man as a saint while the other as a demon are so out of place right now. We are so quick to judge. We do not have any clue what has taken place in the lives of these two men so we have no right to judge anyone of them... not now and never ....

Tonio, Agreed and it needed to be said. Speculation and assumption do nothing to further the investigation but potentially do much to hurt and cause further anguish and distress to the friends and relatives of those involved in what, by any standards, is an absolute tragedy.
