Kenyan Jeptoo wins San Silvestre in record time

Kenya’s world championship marathon silver medallist Priscah Jeptoo won the women’s San Silvestre 15-kilometre race in Sao Paulo on Saturday in a record time of 48min 48sec.

The 27-year-old – winner of the Paris and Turin Marathons during her career – beat home Wude Ayalew, of Ethiopia, while another Kenyan Eunice Kirwa was third for the second successive year in a race that saw 25,000 runners from 34 different countries taking part.

The men’s race was won by 24-year-old Ethiopian Tariku Bekele.

The younger brother of athletics great Kenenisa – a three-time Olympic champion and world record holder in the 5,000m and 10,000m – timed 43min 35sec.

Defending champion Marilson dos Santos, of Brazil, could only finish eighth this time round.
