Malta welcomes 2012
Thousands of people gathered in Valletta and Floriana this evening to welcome 2012.
As the celebrations in Valletta this year were not centred just around St George's Square to prevent last year's disappointment of many who failed to make it through the crowds, there was more room for movement.
More people than last year seemed to opt to celebrate in Floriana.
Partying started from well before midnight culminating with friends and strangers hugging and kissing as the clock struck 12.

my goodness nobody did a resolution not to complain and moan for this year,,, we had a good time with family and friends ignored what we did not like as we were more interested in our drink and enjoying ourselves, the group of tourist near us had a real buzz, anyway well done all those who organised these events, all it cost me in Floriana was a 5 euro pizza and a few rounds of drinks,,as for being amateur and professional Mr David farrugia I am sure you are referring to Floriana as amateur do not forget that Floriana council had the first initiatives to start this event and as usual others followed. Hapy New year to all moaners included

Nothing Special ! Same Old Stuff - the usual entertainers and bands and people stumbling into eachother ! Would expect a lot more for the Best Night of the Year but then again some say better little than nothing - I say Valletta`s fast asleep all year long compared to every European City since the entertainment venues are in other areas - and even after R.Piano`s project is ready - Valletta will Still Remain Fast Asleep during every other evening of the year no matter how many millions it will cost !

Celebrate what? A New Year? For what special reason? Pure speculation?
Do we ordinary mortals know what's in store for humanity in the course of this new year?
It has now become a cult to celebrate all that "makes the world go round": "money"!
From "Hallowe'en" to grotesque festivals and parades!
Soon it will be Mammon for want of another money-spinning activity!

It was an amazing event indeed. Thanks to the bands, Zoo and all the team, St. George's Square was very entertaining till the early morning hours. Not to mention the service provided by Arriva. The service was perfect. All in all, it was very well organised. I am truly satisfied. Only more mobile toilets would have been much better, especially for the women.
HAPPY NEW YEAR YOU ALL. MAY YOU HAVE THIS COMING YEAR FULL OF JOY, HEALTH AND PEACE.

It was a pity that the entertainment at Merchants' Street wasn't promoted as St. Georges' Square event. Even though it was organised by the same organisers. I happened to be at Merchant's Street and all I can say is that the Spiteri Lucas Band performed a marathon of 5 hours non stop uptempo and fast music hits from the present and the past. No other band would have done such an impressive act on New Year's Eve. With more and equal promotion, I'm sure that the crowd could have been better spread. Notwithstanding this, Merchant's street saw thousands of people who went there to enjoy themselves up to the early morning hours of 2012. However I'm sure that at St Georges square there were people who didn't know that at Merchant's Street there was another stage. Thumbs up to Spiteri Lucas Band and its trio of singers, Ivan, Neville and Debbie. One band for 5 hours at Merchant's Street - 4 bands for 5 hours at St. George's Square.

Is it a coincidence that your surname is Spiteri?

WELL DONE ARRIVA FOR THE GREAT SERVICE OFFERED
I did't need to wait a second for a bus at Valletta at 1 in the morning, everything moved smoothy and the barriers were a great idea, well done to all drivers, staff, ticket sellers and all that made the service a success
We have heard so much against Arriva in 2011, but we should congratulate them because they finished off the year on a very positive note, I hope the media shows this and not only when things are going bad
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Is there any reason why with the exception of one seller no one had prices. I for one does not want surprises when going shopping. I hope that next time arround someone from any association , being tal- konsuaturi or what so ever will see that prices are clearly available as otherwise I for one will not buy. This seems to be happening only in Malta, despite all the advertisements of consumers rights, Europe etc...

I guess that's because they removed the old prices to put new fake ones which will be put on sale.
This week I was at a famouse clothes franchise in Valletta and noticed a belt which I had bought a month ago for €16. Now it was marked €25 and discounted to €15!! I managed to peel of the price tag and underneath there was still the €16 price tag!
UNBELIEVABLE!

Happy New Year 2012 to all those who contribute comments to the Times Of Malta. Thanks to the Times of Malta and a growing fearless sense in Maltese citizens of the right of freedom of expression, our comments are making the Fifth Estate of civil society thrive and together with the Fourth Estate of the press become a powerful force of influence in the advancement of true democracy.
