I refer to your news item ‘Call to probe use of water by farmers’ by Juan Ameen (The Sunday Times, December 11), which reported on the national water conference organised by the Church Environment Commission in collaboration with the Malta Water Association (MWA).

It is claimed that MarcoCremona, who is the secretary general of MWA, “criticised the government’s decision to allocate farmers a certain quantity of water from boreholes, saying it was ‘unacceptable’.”

The MWA will be discussing the issue of water quotas for farmers internally and will be communicating its position in the near future.

It is of the opinion that groundwater extraction should be halted immediately by all, except for WSC and agriculture, and that extraction for agricultural purposes is to be properly regulated in line with a sustainable strategy.

The association advocates the re-use of treated sewage effluent to substitute groundwater extraction in agriculture in the medium to long term.
