San Ġiljan ASC have won the Under-15 Winter League after topping a round-robin tournament that also involved Sirens and Sliema.
The winter league success was a morale-booster for the Saints’ junior sector that had been chasing an honour at this level for quite a while after revamping their youth policy three years ago.
San Ġiljan’s U-17 also did well in the winter championship, finishing runners-up. In a statement, San Ġiljan said this was another remarkable result considering that all players in the squad are still 16 years old and some even younger.
Another positive aspect for the Saints in both competitions was the introduction of new faces, particularly goalkeeper Daniel Spiteri, Ben Plumpton and Darren Zammit while Anthony Bugeja returned from a two-month training stage in Hungary.
The San Ġiljan teams were coached by Kurt Dowling and Dean Camilleri under the watchful eyes of club head coach Karl Izzo who monitored proceedings very closely.
Izzo was also in constant communication with the coaching staff of the junior teams during the championships.
