A sailor was airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital from a merchant vessel 15 nautical miles west of Gozo by an AFM helicopter this afternoon.

Medical evacuation was requested by the captain of the cargo vessel Auriga Leader at 11 a.m. when one of his sailors fell ill and suffered severe chest pain.

The AFM deployed an Alouette rescue helicopter whose crew winched the sailor on board and ferried him to hospital for treatment.
