The Strand fills with sea water
Photo: Jason Borg
The Strand in Sliema became a single lane today as the rough seas filled the street providing a spectacle for tourists and locals who happened to be in the area.
As the sea rose, it seeped into the road from under the pavement filling the street to the amusement of some who happened to be passing by. Others were not so pleased as they tried to avoid getting drenched.

@ John Schembri .
You are so right , GRAND Harbour is beautiful . Whilst in the Royal Navy I had many an occasion to enter and leave Grand Harbour and I am not at all ashamed at the glistening of the eyes on coming home . I must also admit the last time on a warship when leaving the Harbour was in the mid sixties and my eyes did not just glisten !!
Pray that the refurbishment goes on and may Fort St Angelo get the attention that this historical place is crying out for .

Sinjuri Victor Pulis u J. Brincat,

Mela kemm qtajtu qalbkom li ser tkunu xi darba fil-gvern?
Għamlu ftit kuraġġ,
Forsi Gonzi PN qed jaħseb biex iħallilkom x'tagħmlu għall meta jekk xi darba tkunu fil-gvern!
Għax naħseb ser issibu kollox lest, għax inkunu lestejna kollox!
Issa stennew ftit ieħor u jkolkom ċans tmorru ħarġa fuq dan il-famużz bridge li qed jibnu Austin Gatt U Gonzi PN.
Minn fuq dan il-bridge li waqqgħu t-Taljani fil-gwerra ser tkunu tistgħu taraw veduta verament sabieħa, kemm sbieħet Mata f' dawn l-aħħar 25 sena, jekk ma jkunux iżjed ukoll!

Sur Victor Pulis,
Il-ħomor jitkelmu b'dak it-ton, ma tatini l-ebda ħitija li jien ikkalkulajtek hekk!
Naħseb li ikkalkulajt tajjeb!
Għax lli kieku inti verament tħobb l-arti u l-kultura iżjed minn ħaġa oħra, ma tħallatx daqsxejn ilma baħar fl'Istrand ta' tas-Sliema mal-proġett tal-bridge tal-Port il-Kbir!
Jaqaw għalik il-bridge mhux parti importanti mill-storja kuaġġuża tal-Maltin?
Dik ikona tal-qlubija tal-Maltin fit-tieni gwerra l-kbira!
U ħaġa oħra, inti tgħix f Malta jew le, għax daqs kemm hawn xogħol ta' restawr fuq il-wirt nazzjonali ta' pajjiżna, qatt ma kien hawn taħt l-ebda gvern u fl-ebda żmien!.
Imma xi uħud jfittxu kull okkażjoni biex jmaqdru dak kollu li jgħamel il-gvern ta' Gonzi PN.
Sa Anke ninqdew bl-ilma baħar ta' l-Istrand biex inkissru l-gvern ta' Gonzi PN!
Il-par idejn sodi ta' Gonzi PN huma l-qofol ta' dan il-progress kollu f' Malta u Għawdex, u xejn mhu ser jnissi dan kollu lill poplu Malti u Għawdxi, bħal ma hawn minn qed jaħseb li ser jirnexxielu jagħmel.
Imma il-poplu Malti u Għawdxi huwa ħafna iżjed inteliġenti milli hawn minn jaħseb li hu!
U ħallina Sur Pulis, aħna rasna fuq għonqa tinsab!

@ those who are grumbling and moaning about the breakwater bridge.
If it cost € 2.8 million than we forked out something around €700,0000 the rest were paid by some European Fund (ERDF?)
Our Grand Harbour is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year .On entering the Grand Harbour we had a line of wooden illegal shacks , an incomplete breakwater with a damaged bridge , and an other eyesore in the form of an oil depot covering the bastions on the Cottonera side.
Now we have a complete breakwater , no eyesores underneath the bastions , clean and restored bastions, no oil depot , the Pinto Water Front and we will soon have the Barracca lift .The first impression by anyone who enters the Grand Harbour would be breathtaking.
Anyone who went for a Mediterranean cruise would tell you what an impressive sight our Grand Harbour is , I dare say that its one of the most picturesque harbours in the world.
Wouldn’t it be worth €2.8 million to embellish it? Not to mention that we got a 75%(?) rebate on the price from the EU.
Victor Pulis
Dec 27th 2011, 14:45
The criticism was about the bridge to nowhere. No one criticized the removal of the shacks and the restoration of the bastions. neither did anyone come out against the rebuilding of the lift. The missing bridge was not an eyesore and no one really missed it. let us replace it by all means but first things first. To mention just one example Senglea's famous vedette at Senglea point is in danger of collapsing as its base is eroded. This vedette is one of the most photographed structures in Malta and an integral part of the grand harbour.
Why must all criticism be put down to govrnment bashing? There are people who don't give a hoot who is in government as their love for history, art and culture precedes any political interests.
John Schembri
Dec 27th 2011, 18:30
Victor, I like history especially our history, if in its electoral program the present party in government promised the re-generation of the Grand harbour it has to re-generate the Grand Harbour.
I’ve been on a cruise ship going out of the Grand Harbour , without the bridge and with those rusty coloumns the area looked in a state of disrepair, now it looks complete and I’m one of many who is planning to go near the lantern at the tip of the breakwater. To put you in the picture it cost us Lm 300,000 .Wasn't it worth it?
I like to go for walks and always wished that I could go there, others who prefer fishing would enjoy going there also. So it’s not a bridge to nowhere it’s a bridge which leads you to the lantern, and facilitates the upkeep of the breakwater, the British who designed and built it were not stupid.
About your worries on the Senglea vedette I agree with you and probably it would be a matter of time when the authorities tackle the Senglea bastions. I’m also worried about fort Ricasoli, Fort St Angelo and Fort St Elmo .
Our ‘problem' in Malta is that we have a lot of historic places which need a lot of maintenance.
Victor Pulis
Dec 27th 2011, 19:37
John in your answer you mentioned nothing about priorities and that's our main problem. At the risk of being branded a certain colour(something that doesn't worry me one bit) I would like to mention another mix up in priorities.Everyday we hear of projects involving recreational areas and playing fields which isn't a bad idea in itself but when are we going to read that the Ta'Qali Crafts village is going to be upgraded and made presentable to the thousands of tourists who visit? Don't tell me that one day its turn will come. Its turn should have come before he playing fields. The village is a showcase for Maltese crafts and deserves better. Millions of euros are being spent on the restoration of the bastions but not one lousy cent is earmarked for Senglea. Part of St. Michael's bastion above the macina was hit during the war and it's still in the same situation. When i asked I was told that its the prerogative of the Cottonera consortium or whatever to decide when or if this damage is to be repaired. So our heritage is left to the whim of a private commercial entity! Do you think that's right?

My God what a fuss , this is nothing new, once in the late eighties I parked my car a Datsun bluebird not a small car, in the strand,, while shopping it rained very heavily and when I came back to the car the water was half way past the doors,,,, when I managed to drive away I went over big puddles to wash the bottom and the rain took the rest away. sold the car about ten years after when it was 18 years old still with its original spray,, low countries always get the worst of these storms,, nothing will fix this as the sea rises the rain has nowhere to go unfortunately,,we should be thankful we do not have the tragedies other countries have to cope with and some are so close to us like Italy. Happy New Year to everybody

May I thank the vans who, whilst I was following the queue of cars gradually making our way through the salty water along Sliema seafront reported above, decided to make a run for it through the sea-water on the inside lane and showered all the diligent cars with a spray of salt water which is very healthy for the vehicle body... NOT.
It would be of interest to point out that the vans were not property of the drivers: one belonged to a private clothing establishment and the other to a govt department... lack of concern to other's property throughout...

Now tell me, Manwel, since the former 'bridge to nowhere' was destroyed by the Italians during the last war, should we have left it as it was?
By the same token, the ruins of the Opera House, destroyed by the Germans seventy years ago, should have been left to grow weeds and continue to be an eyesore for both locals and tourists?
The Strand has experienced the same events for hundreds of years some of which were when Malta was governed by both major political parties, but now, all of a sudden we want the problem solved at the expense of other projects.
Talk to Mother Nature Manwel, maybe you can convince her to keep the waters calm, year round, around the Strand area. Good luck!

Now as regards raising the level of the road ... well can we or perhaps re-design the road to make it pass further away from the front, a road that can be protected by a wall high enough (not 5 mtrs) to stop the waves? Is it possible?

Torrential rain is what we need now followed by this wind. Our fields need the rain, I can see though that heavy rain is on its way to Malta. Hope the island is completely drenched this week.

Skoprejna l-Amerika!!!!!!
I can't understand what's all the fuss about it ? It has been happening for ages and in the past it used to be much worse. Just ask an old Sliema resident and he will tell you when the shops used to be flooded with sea water.

All that is required are boulders ie wave energy breakers, along parts of the quay, this will drastically reduce the energy of the waves in a North East Storm.
No Rocket Science involved.

Not sure if getting our cars wet with salt water is something to be happy with in the long term. Although not urgent, it would be good to have this problem addressed.
