More blood needed before Christmas

The reserve of "O" positive blood at the Blood Bank is down to 66 bags, it said in an appeal to donors to give blood before Christmas.

Such a low reserve was worrying especially at this time when more irresponsible people abused from alcohol and drove. Accidents messed up the low reserve creating a burden to other patients needing blood.

The bank urged people who were healthy to donate blood as early as possible at the Blood Bank next to St Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The bank is open daily.

Donors have to be in possession of their identity card.

I also lived in UK during the mad cow disease period, and was refused.

It also looks like we cannot be donors either, thou I have the UK donor card.

Unfortunately it is not always the case that people don't want to donate blood. I'm taking myself as an example. I am a perfectly healthy 26 year old woman who was a regular blood donor and never had any problem. Recently when i went to give blood i was told that I couldn't because I had low Haemoglobin. Concerned, i went to numerous doctors who told me that the levels were perfectly acceptable & normal so to speak. I went 4 times to try to give blood after confirming that all was well with my doctors but was always turned down. On the 4th time after confronting the doctor at the Blood Donation Clinic he told that Yes my Haemoglobin was within acceptable level but due to the guidelines that they give them they couldn't accept it. I asked if i could get a letter from my doctors confirming that my Haemoglobin is normal and that it won't pose as a risk to me after donating blood but he said that it's not possible, Obviously I felt humiliated and even though I really wish to give blood I won't go again as i know that i will be turned away (for not being within their guidlines) and wasting 45 mins waiting for nothing isn't pleasurable.

Blood Banks should revise their methods of screeing if they want more blood donors.... They are turning perfectly healthy people away.
